Metaphors:
An Essay of Characters Wrapped With Descriptions
TS Metaphors are used throughout life describing the multiple characters of people. CM It helps to paint pictures for people who can't see what beauty is, helps the laughs go around the world. CM They are little helpful tools that stride before all the others in the English language.
TS Metaphors are used every day to describe the people of the world such as Mr. Bob Ewell. SD Mr. Bob Ewell, being known as a "red little rooster" truly embraces his metaphor. CM The way Harper Lee describes Mr. Ewell seems to put the picture right in your mind. CM His appearances has "red little rooster" written all over him: "-we saw that his face was as red as his neck" (Lee, page 227). SD As the whole town knows, Mr. Ewell is known for his ways of living life, and most people scold him for that (compound-complex sentence). CM He often walks around proud of what he does not have. CM Like a "little red rooster" he is proud to show his feathers off to the town that is not impressed at all. CS When Mr. Bob Ewell shows his true "feathers" some will be ashamed to have such a metaphor walking about the town.
TS I am most like paint on a wooden paint palette. SD I am very friendly which allows me to mingle with different types of people. CM Each person I mingle with is a different shade of paint left on the wooden palette. CM When I mix with people and don't end up liking them it turns into a displeasing color that looks horrible on any canvas. SD When the paint dries it leaves a stain. CM The stain represents the good and bad memories that I have made throughout the years. CM There were friendships that did not hold up which caused them to fade away into nothing. SD As the new friendships are created, the future is created, and I am known to make friends very fast and adapt to my surroundings (compound-complex sentence). CM Adapting to my surroundings is one of the jewels that is embedded inside of me. CM Adapting is like the paints mixing in slow motion. CS The colors mix with other colors creating the group of friends that truly mean something to me.
TS Metaphors help us distinguish us from everyone else, a little warning to people to stay away, a little tip to people that I want to be your friend. CM These metaphors can cause some of the nasty rumors and friendships. CS They give us little clues that bring people together more often.

Irony:
The Little Impurities of Life
TS Irony is an unusual thing. CM It weaves in and out through our lives without us knowing it. CM This incongruity happens to some of our main highlights of our lives. CS What you don't want to happen will happen as a little flaw of life.
TS When you look up irony in the dictionary, the definition is: "the use of a words to convey to a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning". SD Irony is used when Jem takes after Aunt Alexandria being manipulative. CM The older Jem seems to get the more manipulative he becomes. CM Often times, Jem will be manipulating Scout and Dill into doing what he wants all it takes is for him to threaten them that he will tell one of their secrets (adverb clause). CM For example: "Jem yanked my hair, said he didn't care, he'd do it again if he got a chance, and if I didn't shut up he'd pull every hair out of my head"(Lee, page 137). SD I thought it was ironic that Dill was supposed to be Scout's fiancee. CM I also thought it was ironic because he didn't start showing affection until a few years later. CM It also seems to be a bit weird to be fiancees that early in life and that serious. SD Jem always treats Scout like she is two years old. CM Jem should recognize the irony and that he is not that older or maturer than she is. CM He thinks that he understands everything better than Scout: " 'I think it's okay, Reverend, she doesn't understand it.' I was mortally offended. 'I most certainly do, I c'n understand anything you can' "(Lee, page 231) CS Why is it that Jem brings most of the irony with him?
TS Irony played a big part in one of the main events that happened over time. SD I remember a couple years ago, when my friends would talk about their parent's divorce I felt lucky. CM I thought that divorce would never happen to my parents. CM Ironically it did, I should of realized a long time ago that I jinxed myself (adverb clause). SD This event was a life changing paradox for me. CM When I think about it I sometimes wondered if I jinxed it saying that divorce would probably never happen to my parents. CM This quirk of fate was laid upon my shoulders and I must wear it like it does not bother me. SD When I told my friends that my parents got separated they doubted that full-fledged divorce would happen to them. CM I doubted this too, thinking nothing but it couldn't possibly happen. CM Before I knew it an irony pill was forced down my throat. CS With irony playing its part in my life it taught me that its impossible to live life without bad things happening to me.
TS This impurity has worked it's way throughout life making lives miserable or happy. CM We don't pay attention to it, leaving it be is best for us. CM We shouldn't mess with the natural flow of life when it is associated with irony.

Feeling Unwanted:
The Effects That It Has On Us
TS You try to say something funny, only the result is rejection. CM Your stomach turns the feeling of being unwanted as found a new home in you. CM Is there any possible way to get rid of it without the painfulness of embarrassment? CS Feeling unwanted is a very simple feeling, but it comes with complicated results.
TS The feeling of being unwanted can hurt the self esteem of a human being. SD Dill feels that he is unwanted and decides to come back. CM The feeling of being unwanted, which usually results in depression and feeling like you are nothing but a grain of dust in the world (adjective clause). CM Before Dill decided to come back to Maycomb, he believed that his parents would spend a lot of time together, love each other together, and he never forgot when he first came and they treated him like an angel (complex sentence). SD Dill has not had a family for awhile, when he starts living with his parents they don't always play with him. CM He feels the loneliness overcoming him and he suddenly feels unwanted. CM His lack of exposure to families he seems to think that when something goes wrong its always his fault: " ' The thing is, what I'm tryin' to say is-they do get on a lot better without me, I can't help them any.' " SD It is sad to see Dill thinking there is something wrong with him and his family never wants to be with him. CM Dill doesn't know that little snags that make him feel unwanted when trying to bond with his family happen to every child in a family. CM Dill is trying to make an lovable impression on his parents but all his results end in feeling discarded. CS Once the unwanted dust floats away will it join others and bond with them?
TS Feeling useless to the world, going through the same routines of "I'm ugly", "nobody likes me", which is a feeling that most girls my age go through (adjective clause). SD When it comes to inside jokes that you do not understand it makes you feel insecure. CM Because you try and fit in, you get distracted and forget about your true friends and you worry about being noticed (complex sentence). CM All you want is just to be apart of one inside joke to make you feel like you are not lonely. SD Then us girls go through this phase change, where we end up thinking very negative of ourselves causing our self esteem to go way down. CM Negativity thrives off of the feeling of being unwanted. CM We think that nobody likes us because of our looks and we end up complaining to our friends or mothers. SD Our self esteem seems to lower when we look at beauty magazines. CM When we look at the women with pounds of makeup it makes us feel ugly and discarded. CM When we come to our senses we realize that they all have helpers that do their hair and makeup everyday. CS Once we feel left out, unwanted we tend to break down until we come to our senses.
TS Nobody ever seems to be fully satisfied with their personality, looks, and self esteem. CM They feel that they don't belong in any group of friends that nobody loves them. CM They overreact about the situation and believe that nobody likes them even though somebody does. CS When we come to our senses everything is peaceful.

My Progression and My Goals
TS Progression is a big part of a young scholars life. SD I know that I have definitely improved on my writing skills a lot more than last year. CM I remember from last year that I always felt like I was the worst at english. CM Now, I feel like I understand the rules of punctuation and chunks. SD I believe that I need to still work on keeping all of the "chunks under the umbrella" as Mr. Salsich would say. CM I end up finding places in my essay's where I am very off track of the topic. CM I will continue to try to find all the mistakes when I am off track and I will fix it so it is on track. SD In general I think I have progressed on paying attention in class. CM I remember that most of the teacher's comments would be about how sometimes I didn't seem to pay attention in class. CM I feel a lot more confident that I am paying more attention. CS I think through this year I will find that things that I will accomplish and things that I will need to improve on.

My Fears:
Common Fears to Me, But Maybe Not For Others
TS Fear is powerful to everyone's personality. CM It can make the people shy because they don't want to tell people their fears. CM Telling someone's fears could be embarrassing. CS When you tell your fears it may lead to shame in yourself.
TS The fears that I have confront me every once in awhile. SD I have realized after going to restaurants that I happen to be scared of intoxicated people. CM I remember a time when I went to Voodoo Grill there were a bunch of men at the bar. CM After awhile, the men started talking really loud and yelling and swaying back in forth andI did not appreciate it. SD There are also times when my friends want me to go to Six Flags but I usually hesitate. CM I admit that I am scared of roller coasters. CM I have been on one that dropped extremely fast which really frightened me. CM The thought of thecontentsof my stomach rising because of the G-Force is very intimidating for me. SD Throughout writing projects, such as essays, I have always been scared to see what my final grade was. CM This nervousness seems to melt away once I have my grade. CM When I have my grade then I can either be disappointed or proud of my work andI won't be anxious about my grade.Throughout life I will gain more fears that will take awhile to emerge. CS What would happen if the world had no fears?
TS I always hear stories about difficulties with cars causing it to crash. SD On the bus back from a field trip during Pine Point Camp, I remember Hannah having problems with opening the bus window. CM There was a fear that dwelled inside of me that was about to emerge without warning. CM With shame she was finally able to open the window with such a force it made a loud popping noise. SD This noise that rang in our ear was far too loud for a window shutting. CM Immediately the bus turned lopsided swerving off the road. CM The tire had popped creating a noise that made us all jump and scream. CM We all quickly thought in our minds that Hannah somehow popped the tire. SD When we slowed down we were all shaking a bit scared of what could of happened. CM We all had a good laugh about it afterwards. CM But some of us didn't realize what could of happened. CS Will this kind of fear confront me again?
TS Shame wins its ways usually. CM Shame confronted me about my fear of roller coasters and embarrassed me. CM It sneaks up out of no where and lowers your self esteem. CS Fears causing shame is not what people need, they need fears that they can conquer and feel good about it.

A Feather:
Different Shades of Personalities
TS A feather flutters to the ground. CM This is like a person's personality fluttering far away so it affects the people around them. CM A male bird's feathers are bold while a female's are barely noticed. CS There are certain times when people want to be in the light or in the shadows.
TS Personalities are always unique, always bold, always your own (anaphora).SD Jem's personality is made up of multiple personalities that Dill might not see, only Scout. CM It always seems that Jem's personality changes when he is around Dill. CM Each personality is like a distinctive shade of color in the feather's quills. SD Jem never seems to listen to Scout when he is around Dill. CM Jem acted like Scout was not important at all: "Jem waved my words away as if fanning gnats"(Lee, page 78). CM For example, when there are a flock of birds they usually warn each other if a predator is coming, but in this case Jem would not listen if Scout tried to warn him. SD Scout always tries her best to fit in with Jem and Dill but it's too hard sometimes. CM Scout is like a bird camouflaging with dull feathers, not wanting to have bold noticeable feathers. CM Scout should not care what they think of her and be proud of herself. CS Everyone shouldn't be ashamed of who they are just because they are slightly different; it's not good for everyone to be clones.
TS There are situations where you have to decide whether you want to be camouflaged or be completely bold. SD Sometimes in my daily activities, I want to camouflaged like dull feathers of a female bird.CM I don't want to be noticed, I don't want to be bothered, I don't want to have the chance of being rejected (anaphora).CM During classes I will sometimes try to blend in with everyone so I have a better chance of not being picked on. SD There are also times when I want to be noticed like a male bird with bold colored feathers. CM When I am trying to tell a story, I usually get annoyed if someone isn't listening when I'm telling it. CM When I say something funny, I usually enjoy it when they acknowledge me by laughing. SD There are, unfortunately, times when I get embarrassed and I want to float away like a feather slowly floats to the ground.CM Jem must have felt like he wanted to float away when he saw that shadow with him on the Radley's porch. CM I'm sure at least once in someone's life they have been so embarrassed that they wanted to disappear. CS The everyday wants and needs of human attention still drags me in of to be or not to be camouflaged.
TS The importance of being noticed or not is always a big issue with people's self esteem. CM Being noticed is such a joy that ricochets off our heart making it pump faster. CM Being unnoticed is a blanket that covers our heart shadowing us from the social world. CS These affect the shades of someone's personality.
